TRAINING OVERVIEW
Park Center has a history of, and commitment to, providing
quality training to
students in social work, counseling, nursing, and other mental health-related
fields. Student training is viewed as a mutual benefit to the student, the
academic
institution and Park Center. Supervising students allows Park Center staff
the
opportunity to assist in the training of future professionals and, in return,
providing
well-trained students who make an invaluable contribution to the community
and to their profession. Placement preference is given to academic institutions
with well structured student training programs. Student placement for
Associates
and Bachelors level students will be up to the discretion of the Placement
Coordinator and will take into consideration the student's academic and field placement requirements, professionalism, as well as, site
and supervisor availability.
Park Center's Student Training Program is designed to address
the needs of
students seeking to complete their final placement of their degree. The number
of students accepted for placement is dependent upon departmental
needs and
priorities, availability of qualified staff to supervise students and the
amount of
structured supervision required by each student. The student's
educational and
experience background must be consistent with the staffing pattern of
the service
in which they are seeking placement. Placements are individually tailored
to meet
the learning and career goals of the student; as well as the objectives
established
by Park Center and the student's academic institution. Appropriate duties will
be
assigned by the student's supervisor in conjunction with the student's faculty
advisor.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Associate and Bachelor level students are expected to
demonstrate good writing
and communication skills, as well as, proper professional demeanor and
attire.
They will also be expected to have some foundational knowledge of mental health
and the type of disabilities served in a mental health system. Students seeking
placement to work with a specific population, i.e., adults, children, substance
abusers, geriatrics, are expected to have taken the appropriate, related course
work, e.g., child development, adolescent psychology, geriatric psychology,
substance abuse, etc., that orients them to the developmental needs of persons
in those populations. Students will also be assigned structured tasks consistent
with expectations of a beginning level clinician during the course of their
internship
placement. The primary objective of the training program is to further the
development
of a student's clinical or administrative knowledge and skills through
supervision,
training and evaluation using an in vivo experience.
CONFIDENTIALITY
All students accepted for placement at Park Center must abide
by and adhere
to Park Center's practices and procedures. All students will be required to
complete
an on-line "HIPAA, Confidentiality and Client Rights"
course which includes a
review of Park Center's policies and procedures on confidentiality and
client rights
and a posttest as evidence that the student understands Park Center's position
on
HIPAA compliance, state confidentiality laws and the rights of clients.
Park Center does not permit the utilization of client
identifiable health information
for class assignments and students may not take any written, audio-visual, or
computer related client information off Park Center's premises. In addition,
faculty
advisors are not allowed to observe students with Park Center clients. When
observation of the student with the client is a requirement of the internship process,
we suggest the student's Park Center supervisor be used to perform that
function on
behalf of the faculty advisor. Therefore, faculty advisors need to clearly
define / articulate the skill areas they want the Park Center supervisor to
observe on their behalf.
MALPRACTICE / LIABILITY INSURANCE
Park Center's malpractice / liability insurance policy covers students during their
field placement at Park Center. Associate and Bachelor level students are not
required to carry liability insurance, however, if the academic institution
provides
their students with malpractice / liability insurance coverage, then we request
the
internship / practicum faculty advisor provide Park Center's Professional
Development
Coordinator with documentation of the insurance coverage.

Submitting Completed Application Materials To Park Center:
Student applicants are asked to submit the application requirements
as a complete packet rather than piecemeal to reduce the risk of something getting
lost. The application packet should be submitted to the appropriate Placement Coordinator
for consideration:

Residential Coordinator, Phone: 260-481-2700 Ext. 2406, E-mail: cmather-grimes@parkcenter.org

supervisors to discuss the placement
process, placement opportunities, review the student's application, and provide a basic
orientation
to Park Center and who we serve.
The placement interview process provides both the supervisor

placement can provide and the student's placement goals. Prospective students will be
notified regarding the status of their application.

(Note: the
Student
Placement Checklist covers all this)
- The Professional Development Coordinator, as well as, the
Placement Coordinator shall maintain a placement file (e.g., application, confidentiality
forms, evaluations, etc.) on all students accepted for placement.
- The Student shall meet with the Placement Coordinator to review
placement guidelines and student responsibilities, inform students who may be
responsible for client documentation about our electronic record and how to receive training,
to help students access our on-line policies & procedures and the new employee
on-line training curriculum, as well as, to help them orient
to Park Center services.
- Students are expected to comply with all Park Center
Personnel Policies and Procedures, including how to handle absences, notice of changes in
schedule, response to supervision, how to be reached, etc.
- Students accepted for placement shall report to their
assigned supervisor on the agreed upon date and time. On the first day, the supervisor
shall arrange for the student intern to obtain an ID from Human Resources
within 2 days after they start. If the supervisor wants the student to work in Unicare, the supervisor will
need to arrangement a meeting with the Professional Development Coordinator so
they can be assigned a UniCare ID prior to going to Human Resources.
- Students must review the Park Center's policies and
procedures (both Centerwide and for the department they are placed in) then sign and submit the
Confidentiality Statement, Corporate Compliance Agreement, Code of Ethics Statement and
Health Certificate to their supervisor on the first day of
their placement.
- A week after the placement begins, students and their
supervisors shall sign and submit a Student Placement Contract (Educational Agreement is often
provided by the school system) & Placement Schedule to the
Placement Coordinator and the student's faculty advisor.
- The supervisor and student should also create
a Placement Training Plan which identifies 3 - 4 primary learning goals for placement and defines how those
learning goals will be met throughout the course of the placement. The Placement
Training Plan is used as a guide during the mid and final evaluation process to give
the student feedback on how they are doing.
- Students shall maintain, and submit to their
supervisor, a record of placement hours completed.
- Supervisors shall document each supervision session
and maintain a file of supervision documentation. The Supervision
Documentation Form can be used for this purpose. They also need to complete a written
Student
Placement Evaluation and review the evaluation with the student as well as
submit a copy of the report to the Placement Coordinator and the student's faculty advisor for
their files.
- The student's supervisor is responsible for
completing and forwarding any materials required by the school relative to the student's
performance to the student's
faculty advisor and Placement Coordinator.
- The student's supervisor is responsible for providing
ongoing supervision and monitoring the student's performance, including allowing time for
regular formal or informal staffing of the student's cases.
- All students must submit all medical records data
entries to their supervisor for review, discussion and sign-off.
- Students shall attend departmental / program meetings
and staff training events deemed appropriate by their supervisors.
- Supervisors shall provide students with a Supervision
Evaluation Form (along with self-addressed return envelope) which
students are to complete within 2 weeks following completion
of placement.
- The Professional Development Coordinator shall
receive a copy of all supervision
documentation for the student's placement file.
- It is important that supervisors immediately inform
the Professional Development Coordinator
of any problem(s) or potential problem(s) between Park Center, the
student, and/or the academic institution. If a
student is at any point unable to fulfill their
placement responsibilities according to Park Center standards, the placement
may be terminated.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES DURING PLACEMENT
- Students are expected to demonstrate professionalism
both in their demeanor and in their attire.
- Students are to abide by Park Center's Code of Ethics.
- Students need to be flexible when working out a
placement schedule and
when scheduling supervision time with supervisors. Our clinical supervisors
are
generally very busy individuals who will do their best to work out a
mutually
agreeable schedule. (Note: It may be in the student's and
supervisor's best interest to schedule supervision meetings 4 weeks in advance to reserve
the time. It is also good practice to schedule the mid and final evaluation
dates in advance so that you allow time to prepare them.)
- Students will be expected to maintain attendance according to their placement schedule. Any changes in
the placement schedule need to be approved
by the supervisor.
- Students are expected to disclose to the clients they work
with: their student intern status, the approximate time they will be working at Park Center
(duration of placement), and who their clinical supervisor is. Clients
have the right to know this information when making treatment decisions.
- Students will be expected to treat their placement
with the same respect they would an employer. Therefore, if a student is ill, they need to take
responsibility for seeing their appointments are canceled or covered and to notify their
supervisor they won't be in to work that day. If they are sick for more than 3
scheduled work days, they will need a doctors statement indicating they were too ill to work. If
a student is away for longer than two weeks, it may result in termination of placement.
- Students need to take responsibility to regularly
schedule time to staff their cases either with their supervisor or during the department clinical
staffing time. This includes review of diagnostic impressions, case conceptualizations,
treatment planning & interventions, and progress updates. It is not acceptable for
students to do any of this work without direct supervision of the supervisor.
- Students should allow time for closure with clients
they are working with. Clients can get close to students over time and forget they will be leaving, so it
is important for the student to take time during their last two weeks to say good-bye to
those they are working with, including staff.
